Inventory Management for Water Bottle Manufacturing Plants
A stock count is a snapshot of a moment that has already passed. Here is what makes raw material and finished stock stay accurate between counts.

A stock count tells you what was true at the moment someone walked the yard and counted. It’s already slightly wrong by the time it’s written down, because production and dispatch don’t stop for the count. Inventory management for a bottling plant is really about closing that gap: keeping the recorded stock figure close enough to reality that a count is a confirmation, not a correction.
Two kinds of stock, one system
A plant is really tracking two different things under the word “inventory”: raw material (preforms, caps, labels, film, cartons, raw water) and finished cases per product. They move in opposite directions from the same event. A production run reduces raw material and increases finished cases, in the same entry, which is the only way the two stay consistent with each other over time.
The bottles-per-case figure carries more weight than it looks like
Every product, from a 250 ml bottle to a 20 L jar, has a bottles-per-case figure and a bottle and cap material it consumes. That single figure, set once when the product is created, is what makes a production entry (cases produced, plus rejections) enough to work out material consumption automatically. Get it wrong at setup and every production entry after it will be wrong in the same direction, which is why it’s worth checking once, carefully, rather than trusting a default.
Rejections are inventory events too
A rejected empty bottle and a rejected capped bottle are different failures at different points in the run, and folding both into “accepted minus something” loses the distinction. Recording them as their own fields on the production entry keeps material consumption accurate (a capped rejection has already used a cap; an empty rejection hasn’t) and keeps a plant’s real yield visible instead of smoothed over.
A threshold only works if it’s specific
A single low-stock warning level across every material treats a slow-moving material like cartons the same as a fast-moving one like caps, which means it’s either constantly triggered or never useful. A threshold set per material, based on how quickly that specific material actually gets used, is what turns a stock level into a genuinely early warning instead of noise.
Knowing what you could still produce, not just what you have
Raw material stock on its own answers “how much do I have.” It doesn’t answer “how many cases could I still make today,” because that depends on whichever material runs out first, bottles or caps, whichever is scarcer. A figure that translates current material stock into producible cases, per product, is what actually prevents a run from starting and stopping partway through because one material ran out first.
